In the caption accompanying the image, NASA asked: “Have you ever seen a full moon rise?”
This colorful image was captured last weekend in Sicily, Italy, near the town of Nicosia.
It is a composite image showing the moon rising as the sky gradually darkens.
Lower-lying clouds reflect the colors of twilight, while ash and gases from Mount Etna are visible in the upper part of the frame.
The pinkish band visible low in the sky is known as the “Belt of Venus.”
During a full moon, the moon and the sun are positioned on opposite sides of the sky; consequently, the moon rises at approximately the same time the sun sets.
The complete cycle of lunar phases takes about 29.5 days, although it takes the moon roughly 27 days to complete one orbit around Earth.
In some Northern Hemisphere cultures, September’s full moon is known as the “Harvest Moon.”
