The head of the Mahabad Environmental Protection Department stated that the dredging and cleaning operations for approximately 2 kilometers of channels and drains leading to the international Kani Barazan Wetland in the county have commenced with the aim of facilitating water transfer and improving the wetland’s water conditions.
Farrokh Salmi added: Given that the channels and drains leading to the wetland are dry during this season, dredging and cleaning operations are currently underway to facilitate the better transfer of river water and rainfall to the wetland.
He continued: This operation is being carried out along three routes using one excavator, and a total of approximately 2 kilometers of the routes leading to the wetland will be dredged.
The head of the Mahabad Environmental Protection Department continued: The soil excavated from the channels is also piled up along the edges of the channels to ensure that, while cleaning the path, smoother water flow towards the wetland is enabled.
Regarding the routes for implementing this project, he said: The first route towards the eastern side of the wetland, with a length of 1,500 meters and a width of 8 meters, the Qara River route with a length of 500 meters and a width of 5 meters, and the route leading to the observation tower with a length of 500 meters and a width of 5 meters, will be dredged.
Salmi also announced plans to release one million cubic meters of water from the Mahabad Dam reservoir towards the Kani Barazan Wetland, stating that, following the necessary coordination, this amount of water will be released towards the wetland in the second half of the month of Shahrivar.
The head of the Mahabad Environmental Protection Department, referring to the favorable condition of the Kani Barazan Wetland this year, stated: Suitable spring rainfall, the revival of springs, and the cleaning and restoration of drains leading to the wetland have resulted in the wetland having sufficient water even in the last month of summer.
Salmi continued: Currently, the aquatic and semi-aquatic birds present in the wetland are in a favorable situation regarding access to water and food resources, and the habitat conditions of Kani Barazan are noticeably better than last year.
He reminded that last year, during the same period, large parts of the Kani Barazan Wetland had dried up, and only the marshy areas had a small amount of moisture. For this reason, some birds had migrated to other wetlands in the region to access water and food resources.
